Is A Course In Miracles Really Self-Study?
Is A Course in Miracles truly a self-study course? Despite being repeatedly described as "self-study," the Course's own pages tell a different story-one that includes teachers, pupils, and a structured learning process designed by Jesus himself. In this episode of Exploring A Course in Miracles, Robert and Emily Perry discuss the negative impact of the “self-study” label, the Course's own plan for a teacher-pupil model, honest reflections on the Circle's attempts to establish this model, and why having a knowledgeable teacher can make all the difference in actually understanding and applying the Course's wisdom to your life.

Making Relationship Work with A Course in Miracles (Sunday Gathering Sermon)
Christianity was all platitudes. The new agers still keep god and kingdom outside themselves. They don't ground themselves in the identity of god. I left those groups as well because it was not resonating or making a difference. I didn't find the living water. It is in ACIM.
I could not retain Jesus. My attitude became surprise me. That left an opening for there to be truth. I was open to other religions. I was an agnostic for a while. I always had a loss and longing for there to be something. I was always disillusioned with life. I know ACMI is the truth having gone down many byways. I would not allow myself to get sucked in by any doctrine people claimed to be absolute truth.
So inspiring! Thank you Emily! ❤
A Course in Miracles isn’t for everyone, and that’s perfectly fine. Not everyone vibes with the same kind of spiritual journey-some people prefer a simple map, while others love diving into a giant, mystical treasure hunt. For those of us who love this book, it’s like finding a key to unlock parts of ourselves we didn’t even know existed. Sure, it’s a challenging read (and sometimes feels like it was written by a poetic Jedi), but for the right people, it’s a game-changer. And for those who find it too much? That’s okay too! We’re all climbing the same mountain, just using different trails. Let’s celebrate all the ways we get there-whether it’s with A Course in Miracles or something totally different.

Is it true that the course in miracles teaches you to see your love with an intimate partner as an illusion? and that intimate relationship love should considered to be no higher than love for a brother in your community?
No, it's not true that the Course asks us to see our love with an intimate partner (or anyone for that matter) as an illusion. In the Course love is the only thing that's real. I would recommend watching or listening to our podcasts on love or the world to gain some clarity on this very important topic. - Emily xx

@29:11 sometimes I wonder how these two navigate the age difference in their relationship. I’ve been waiting for hours for some insight. Here it is, just back up 30 seconds or so from the timestamp to get the context. Worth it Dude’s still like, “wow you’re really young!” She be like, “ya moving on.” There are some things ineffable here. I mean, the overwhelming impression I get is of a dude whose head is continually in the clouds with a lady who’s equally so, until he crash lands and then they realize the age difference and quickly shake the magic carpet they’re riding and once they’re aloft again it doesn’t matter up there So cool how this little bump in the road went under the car that is their togetherness. These two are so freaking lucky to have each other. Marvelous

Hi, Robert and Emily! I posted this in the Circle Community as well, but wanted to post it here in case it was missed. I have not finished watching this yet, but I wanted to share something I discovered some time ago on this very topic of the Course being referred to as "self-study." I have a small little book called "Choose Once Again: Selections from A Course in Miracles" that was edited by Julius J. Finegold and Bill Thetford. It was published in 1981 by the Foundation for Inner Peace. It is possible one or both of you also have a copy of this book. I cannot find any indication regarding who wrote the introduction, but I always assumed it was Bill. The second paragraph begins with the question, "What is A Course in Miracles?" There is then a description of the three volumes. I am going to quote what is written about the Manual for Teachers and the sentence directly after this brief description. The Manual is described as 88-pages "which defines the role of teachers (all of us, as we are all teachers and pupils to each other). At another level, the Course is a re-teachinig of eternal truths, presented as a self-study course for personal transformation." Very interesting. The parenthetical statement about "all of us" being teachers and pupils seems to downplay the role of actual teachers of the Course. And, that next sentence minimizes the role of teacher again by using that all-to-familiar term, "self-study." I am not sure if this is the earliest published use of that term, but 1981 does seem pretty early when it comes to the history of the Course.
@@billyledford2865 That may be the source of self-study in part for sure. What a find! - Emily
Had to post again, this is fascinating, I appreciate the insights and objective analyses. I keep thinking, there's a receiver, a transducer and a transmitter. The logos itself could be characterized as a pure coherent signal looking for a receptive circuit. :)
Agenesis or partiality of the development of the corpus callosum? Breakdown of the bicameral mind? Dunno, but just speculating. I've read much of the course. It is significant.
Only a few bunch of satanic cult believing bastards of sola scriptura a man made tradition invented by a devil possessed man including the crooks who did the carbon dating nonsense were desperately trying to disprove and dismiss the shroud of Turin as a mere catholic thing out of their satanic inspired hatred without cause against the Church of saints that Jesus established under the stewardship of Peter but the shroud itself stood up to protect the devinely testimonial masterpiece of Jesus's resurrection which no human science can even comprehend nor will ever be and those idiots are not realising the fact that what they are doing is tantamount to falsely testifying against Jesus himself just like the ones who crucified him

Seems like a semantics confusion. The course is adamantly clear that we return "home" together or not at all. We cant do it on our own, yet we must all in sone sense acknowledge the oaradox we are alone together in our separate experience. It is seld study in the aense it is a study if the "self" and we need the mirror of others and rhe inner teacher. And ar times external more formal teachers who are also students xan be useful.
Ps love this discussion, thanks
😊 as a 🙂 it could also mean it's self-study as in you have to study it yourself it's no good other people studying it for you and hoping that you will get the answer or not have to do the work.
Healing is very inevitable… mind healing definitely extends into the body in the dream 🎉❤ Lesson 24 and throughout the course this is explained… thankfully very obvious ❤
Duality and separation are a real kicker. I mean. The was a time when there was one Course of miracles but apparently there are now two. Polarisation. Duality. As soon as you have duality your back in the loop. Get to ACIM students together and they will probably differ on a detail. I think people should never try and teach the course. I think it is healthy to chat about like any scientist. How many versions of Christianity are there. How many versions of Islam or Buddhism even Catholicism and Protestantism. It is EGO joke of divide and conquer. I have been a student since around 2017. I live in a foreign country and it has helped me stay centered because first I discovered that we students are generally led to ACIM and I found the answer in of everything I had been asking about but I am yet to find anyone outside the community who buys it. Having bought it, in many cases people won't read it and I believe EGO does not want us reading it. It wasn't happy about me reading it. I thing it has to be a self study course because ultimate it is the self that chooses again and eventually that last choice it the last choice, made in isolation. God bless
I don't know if you're going to see this comment after more than a year, but here goes. You are puzzled about the apocalyptic parables in the Gospel's and Revelations (which is what "apocalypse" means). Both science and scripture tell us that Nature/Creation has an evolution/unfolding order toward greater diversity, beauty and intelligence. The scientific best term for this is Syntropy, the opposite of entropy. This evolving syntropy requires a process of selection, where "unfit" individuals and even whole species are eliminated, unable to propogate, if they are not in harmonious accord with the laws/constraints of Nature or the Creator. This is an established fact as far as I know. Evolving syntropy also requires that individuals and whole species are free to deviate from what preceeded them, whether through genetic mutations, cultural innovation, or other forms of free-will and choice. The consequences of these changes and choices includes the selection process, though this is extremely dynamic and contextual. Ways of living that have been harmonious with Nature and the Creator for many many generations can become unfit when the wider context changes. Remember, Creation/Nature are not static. Conditions change. Furthermore, when conditions change rapidly, so do "selection pressures". This has happened repeatedly in the past, and every time results in dies-offs and extinction events. We are in the midst of one of these events, with loss in biomass and species diversity due to extremenly rapid changes Earth's oceans, climate, and ecosystems caused by destructive human technologies and consumption. In this way, mankind has become like the Beast of Reveleation, our thoughtless consumption driven by greed and desire, not by our true needs. All indications are that in a handful of generations, will experience a mass die-off as so many species are already, and perhaps join those on the "extinct" list. This judgement/selection is not mystical magical wu-wu or fire and brimstone fundamentalism. Not at all. It is a fulfillment of God's plan for how Creation evolves and sustains herself - the fit being separated from the unfit, and the unworthy being tossed into the fire. This is no more harsh than the blessing of gravity, which will rip my body apart if I jump off a tall tower, but which formed the stars and the elements, birthed the earth and clothes her in water and atmosphere, and causes our sun to radiate its life-giving energy. So this explains why God's plan is that the unworthy "goats" must, at some time, be selected by Nature to be tossed into the fire. But what about the other part of the parable, where humans are expected to be merciful to the poor, the vulnerable, the weak, and the apparently unworthy? Emily stumbles on this apparent contradiction by assuming that we are supposed to act like God in terms of judgement/selection of other people (or even other creatures?). But this is clearly not the case. As Robert points out, the Gospels clearly teach us to refrain from judging, punishing, or killing "others" because they appear weak, unworthy, or different from us. This may not have been necessary when our hominid ancestors were still embedded in Nature/Creation, before our novel intelligences allowed us to speak and cooperate (the fruit of knowledge), before our big brains caused painful and dangerous childbirth, before we set about controlling nature through agriculture and technology, before we managed to escape the usual forces of selection (for a while) and our population exploded across the planet. Like it or not, the fact is humanity entered a period of (constrained) dominion over the Earth ("The Fall"), and this is where we find ourselves. The questions is whether Nature is going to correct this deviation by finally selecting humanity as unworthy after all, or we are going become worthy by understanding and respecting God's plan for Creation, and our place in it, by expanding our awareness of God, the sacred, and the miracuous, by seeking love and compassion, and by transcending greed, power-lust, fear of "the other", and other unecessary fears and desires. In other words, will we set about cultivating syntropic communities (the Sonship), or remain in bondage to exponential entropic consumption (the Beast).
I have heard this inner voice or guide before giving me a warning of something about to happen, that did happen. It was in my language. I could never know how to describe it or how it happened.
I agree that the cult of individual specialness is a major hindrance to true forgiveness. The only remedy is to think that we are all exactly the same , which means that no one is special.
Hello Emily & Robert ...... I've thought more about this since I first saw your video, and while its clear that you are working to maximize the effectiveness of the course in people's lives, I think I understand the mistake that was made making this concept feel not wholly true. Thet eaching - learning situation as the course describes in the manual is the ideal outcome of the holy spirit entering the relationship. I am certain you would agree to this. "Each one learns that giving and receiving are the same ...." Where I think you are incorrect is that you think you can arrange such a teaching-learning situation i a formalized fashion, aka, your "group leader program". You are incorrect. Miracles are habits and should be involuntary. To add to the understanding of my point..... I work on Britney's team, and she has called people together to work the workbook in groups. In these groups, all the participants are equal in their role. And Britney DOES not declare herself as the head teacher, and makes clear who she is and who she is not. The teaching-learning situation in these relationships, in these groups, HAS YET TO BE "triggered", as just saying YES is simply not enough to accept the goal of the relationship. People say yes all the time, but they do not stick to the work to receive its miraculous benefits. I do not believe that everyone who says yes to your program or to Britney or to anyone, will become a miracle worker. You cannot force healing to those who do not desire healing. And lots of people who do the course, do not desire healing yet. So just to summarize again. The ICK in this concept is that the teaching learning situation is arranged by the holy spirit and not through commercial ventures or free workshops. Joining a group or a workshop ir a course Its not enough, and to assume it is, is to underestimate what a miracle really IS and does for the mind of the receiver. Please notice the "you do not arrange part" "Through your holy relationship, reborn and blessed in every holy instant you do not arrange, thousands will rise to Heaven with you. " Thank you for listening.
Hi Tom - I feel like we resolved this in my last post to Britney so I'm not sure there's much need to relitigate it all. Please read my comment to her as I think we landed on some solid common ground there. I will say this, though. We've never assumed everyone who comes to our programs will become a miracle worker. It's very common for people to come in, decide the Course (or the Circle) isn't right for them, and move on to something else. That said, it's also very common for people to come into our programs who would not have met otherwise and are very grateful for the connection. Who is to say the Holy Spirit isn’t part of those meetings? The Holy Spirit works everywhere including, no doubt, through your own free and paid programming. - Emily
For me, forgiveness rests on the fact that we are all in the same boat of illusion. Or, to put it another way , we have all made the same mistake of forgetting our true nature. How could we have compassion for our own mistakes if we can't forgive the mistakes of " others " ?
We don't really forgive " others " because there's only ONE of us . If we want to know our wholeness, then our minds must include all of us , as one .
Wow. Great video. Love it. That's my God. All loving no judgment. Just love. Only if we all understood this 😢😢😢😢😢😢

Very interesting! Thank you very much! Probably it is not through the intellect that we can understand such questions, however I have a few. If the Plan is timeless, how can it come to completion? And regarding the salvation of the world, what world? Does that refer to the world created by human beings? In such a case, being this world an illusion, why should it deserve "salvation"? Salvation of an illusion? And following to the reconciliation of human beings with God? Why? What for? Thank you very much.

Hello Emily and Robert, I' ve been studying the Course for some time now, on my own. I' ve used your videos and articles to clarify some concepts that would not have been clear overwise. I do not know anybody that is familiar with ACIM, and can't figure out where to find a teatcher. What is your opinion about such circumstances? Thanks
Hi Isabel - We have a program that will walk you through the Course. It's called Course Companions and you can learn about it here: coursecompanions.com/ If you wanted a more personalized experience, we don't have one-on-one teachers just yet but we have over 50 study groups in our directory. Many are free of charge and you can find them inside community.circleofa.org. Hope that helps. - Emily xx
Wonderful episode/conversation!
Hey Emily & Robert, Thanks for your video. I am inspired to add my thoughts to this conversation. You are both correct that the community’s current definition of self-study generally means “learn the Course by yourself.” I do not agree with this conclusion either. We are NOT meant to study ACIM by ourselves. However, there is another way to define "self-study" that makes sense. To me, it means that only I can change my mind, decide when to study, how often to study, and whether I even choose to study at all. I am the only one who can take responsibility and rule my own mind-no one else can do that for me. It’s up to me to decide if I will listen to Christ or my ego to define things for me. In this sense, it IS a self-study course. Even in your edition it says at the beginning of T3: "This course is a mind training course. Good students assign study periods for themselves. I urge you to make this obvious assignment now" You’re also right that ACIM is about relationships. We can’t learn it properly in isolation. To me, ACIM is fundamentally about the holy relationship-we learn of our True Self and True Purpose in our holy relationships and its a way of "saving us time". But self-study and applying it in relationships work together, they must, otherwise its too easy to let go of our own sense of agency and take what others say as "truth" instead of coming to it inside our selves through our inner teacher.... This is why its important to remember that when Jesus speaks of teacher/pupil relationships, he doesn’t mean formal A Course in Miracles teachers-he’s referring to being a Teacher of God. Not everyone is called to teach the Course like you guys or me. That’s a God-given role and definitely NOT part of everyone's curriculum... However, we can all be Teachers of God in our own lives, as the Spirit directs us. Jesus tells us that "to teach is to demonstrate" and we are to demonstrate, every day, that Christ is in us and that we are not an ego. In the Teacher’s Manual, under “Levels of Teaching,” Jesus explains this idea beautifully. He shows us that by “teacher,” he means Teacher of God, and by “pupil,” he means anyone we encounter where there’s an opportunity to see innocence-like a child bumping into us on the street “accidentally.” Jesus never mentions teacher as being a formal “A Course in Miracles teacher.” I am open to having a back and forth about this, as its definitely an important topic to clear up. Love you guys. Thanks for all you do for the Course <3
Thanks a lot for your sharing your thoughts to this conversation. They make perfectly sense to me, especially your point that the Course never mentions teacher as being a formal "A Course in Miracles teacher", but is talking about a Teacher of God. The Manual also mentions in the last chapter: "The curriculum is highly individualized, and all aspects are under the Holy Spirit's particular care and guidance. Ask and He will answer. The responsibility is His, and He alone is fit to assume it. To do so is His function. To refer the question to Him is yours." I don't think that there are many students of the Course that learn the Course completely by themselves. Somehow almost everyone finds a teacher guiding them through the Course that resonates with them. For some of them that will be Ken Wapnick, for others Emily and Robert or anyone else. I discovered there are many teachers out there who can support the students of the Course and they even don't have to be formal Course teachers.
Hi Britney! Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I agree with so much of what you've said and sincerely appreciate your heart for the Course and desire to stay true to what it says. We obviously have a real fondness for that around here. 🤗 I would just square the edges a bit, though, and say that, yes, you can read the Course on your own and we're very much meant to do that. The section you pointed to is called "The Need to Study" and I know Robert was thrilled to put it back into the Text. (It's new to the CE.) That said, just because we're meant to study on our own doesn't automatically take the place of teachers. Going back to the instrument example, my stepson is in an orchestra and he has a viola teacher. The time he spends with his teacher is meant to supplement his daily practice, not replace it. Same here. We shouldn't use quotes on the importance of study to wipe out a whole volume that speaks to the importance of teachers. It's not one or the other. It's both. Also, you say there's another way to define self-study, but what you describe isn't what people hear when they hear "self-study." In normal parlance "self-study" just means outside a classroom or formal teacher. What you're talking about in your comment, as you noted, is mind training. In other words, if you say "mind training", people know you mean the very things you describe, e.g. changing your mind, deciding when to study, taking responsibility for your thoughts, etc. Accordingly, it just doesn't seem like a good idea for us to use definitions that are outside common understanding in the hopes that people will understand the meaning we've ascribed. Finally, there's no question we're all teaching all the time. And we're definitely not saying everyone is called to formally teach the Course. But we may just have to agree to disagree on whether, by "teacher", he includes people who teach the Course. You mentioned the Levels of Teaching section and how teaching can be as simple as not getting angry when a child bumps into you in the elevator. That's true - and you're right. That's not formal teaching. But in the Introduction to the Manual he acknowledges "the formal teaching situation." Again, it's not formal teachers or informal teachers. It's both. So it doesn't feel accurate to just flatly state that he doesn't mean formal teaching situations in the Manual. Sometimes he does. I guess the bottom line here is that I'm really not disagreeing with your larger points, but I do feel there are some distinctions to be drawn out on some of the finer ones. I also feel grateful for Robert reinstating that part, as it has been a valuable reference for me in my interactions with others. :) I must say that even though many Course students hear "self-study" and think it means "outside a formal classroom," that's not the only definition, and it might be helpful to provide a definition that is more accurate. Because honestly, we must read the Course on our own-no one can do that for us. If we do not take full responsibility for our studies, we will be forever reliant on what other people think about it and turn to them for answers instead of looking within. So, when listening to you both speak, I felt you threw the term "self-study" in the garbage without redefining it (which is what ACIM is all about). Instead, you used it as an opportunity to say that formal teachers of the Course are necessary, and I really do not believe they are necessary. They are helpful, and we will be brought to teachers if we need them, but they are not necessary. I have never taken any human to be my teacher of the Course. I have only ever studied it with Jesus as my teacher, and through my willingness to take it seriously as a self-study and apply what I am learning in it to my relationships, I have been led to God and my purpose directly. So I am speaking from experience here, not just ideas. We also must remember that miracle working is not like learning the piano. Piano does require a human teacher. A Course in Miracles is self-sustaining and has everything contained within it for any one of us to take it into our minds and hearts with Jesus and the Holy Spirit-and that be enough. Clearly, ACIM emphasizes relationships, which I am SO glad you and Robert highlight. It’s been left out of discussions in our community for far too long. But relationships being the "temple of the Holy Spirit" is different from saying "formal teachers are necessary." I see the mention of "formal teaching situations" includes Course teachers, of course, but not exclusively. This is reserved for any relationship where there is a teaching/learning dynamic that has the potential to demonstrate miracles being for "those who temporarily have more for those who temporarily have less." This can include mentors, spiritual therapists, counselors, lawyers, schoolteachers, entrepreneurs, parents, and coaches. So, we as Teachers of the Course must resist the temptation to assign a role to students (such as Course Teacher), as it is not us who assigns others their role in God’s plan, but only Him. Like I said in my first response, I do not think most students of the Course are meant to be formal teachers of A Course in Miracles at all. Most have their part written on their Soul, and we want to get them in touch with that and not what we think they should do. Thanks for hearing me out. When it comes to all this stuff, there is such a fine line, and we have to be careful not to cross it in this regard. I truly feel we’re aligned on so much here, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to have this dialogue with you. Sending so much love and gratitude! 🙏💖
I have self studied the course for over 30 years. I find I am making very fast progress now, making it my focus and top priority, and this is due to finding and joining the Circle. This format for learning is incredibly motivating, and it is so helpful to be in a community. I love the discussion and debate. This does not preclude us from having our own relationship with Jesus and taking guidance from the HS.

"Presumably ". That clicked. 33:10.
I can’t see the issue here. The Workbook does not say: ‘Go out, find yourself a registered / qualified Course teacher, and then we will start’. We have seen evidence of previous Course communities where the “guru” problem arises from a single teacher assuming so much power over the whole operation. The Course says: “The teacher will arrive when the student is ready”. The development of self discipline to get up each day, and read through the lesson of the day, and do the practice periods, IS up to each of us as individuals. Later, as we start to learn about the exponential power of the holy relationship, our learning becomes much more interactive. I like the way that the Manual talks about the teacher/pupil relationship in the first section - it is a refreshing reversal of traditional concepts of teaching and “pupilling”. Also, as well you know, we have a history of Ken Wapnick trying to control the delivery of teaching so tightly, and putting copyrights on the Course etc. How did that turn out? Let’s learn from that. With love.
Andrew, Thanks for your comment. I understand the dangers inherent in teaching / learning situations, especially in spiritual community. I talked about this in the episode. We aren't interested in the guru model and, personally speaking, I think that model is dangerous for all the reasons you already know. And I also strongly disagree with the constraints placed on teaching and sharing the Course. During the copyright lawsuits our tiny nonprofit spent over $I00,000 defending our right to share the material, so we are very much with you that limitations in who is the "authority" is not the way to go. But that's not at all what's being discussed here. We're not talking about consolidating authority or constraining anything. It's the opposite - we're talking about training a lot of people to share the principles of divine love and forgiveness. To say "let's not have teachers because look at this bad thing that happened over there" is like saying "let's get rid of gardens because there are weeds in them." You don't lose the beauty of the garden because there are weeds. You simply uproot the weeds. Likewise, we don't believe it's wise to lose the beauty of teachers because there's a possibly of things going wrong. Humans are messy and things will always go wrong. And yet, we still believe it's wise to take the Course at its word regarding a teacher / pupil model and do everything we can to build it in a healthy way. That's what we're trying to do. - Emily xx
Emily and Robert are great teachers. I especially love the fact that Robert edited a new version, the CE. I am thinking of the incredible devotion and persistence this must have taken. His skills for research and attention to detail are truly amazing. And Emily's warmth, love, acceptance, social consciousness, honesty, and her ability to speak up and question and debate is remarkable. Together, they are magic.
@ all true. Thankyou.
They are the reason and the CE And why I became completely devoted, and yeah Everything was just working against me yesterday, but after I got all that out I had the most peaceful rest I don't remember the last time I rested that much

Hello Robert and Emily. It’s Donna Feldhan from Course Companions and I’d like to share my experience.I’ve been in a Teacher-Pupil relationship with a longtime Circle of A member since 2023.I can attest to the healing and growth I’ve received in this particular relationship. I remember when we started working one-on-one my teacher told me her role was to motivate me to learn quicker than if I were studying on my own. I’ve witnessed the evidence of that statement and have even received physical healing through our relationship. It’s been guided by the Holy Spirit since the beginning, and, yes, I’ve thrown my own ego tantrums and have been resistant to her authority as a teacher. All of this is to be expected but I’m grateful for this opportunity. She always reminded me we are equal brothers but she is further along than me in time and one day I’ll be where she is😊 And one more thing: this is Jesus’ book and this is his plan for our return to God. Being in this relationship has been a testament to that🙏
@@dfeldhan1 Hi Donna - I didn’t realize you had a teacher so I’m happy to hear you’re gaining so much. I hope you both continue benefit from the experience. - Emily xx
@@CircleOfAtonement Thank you🥰
It just takes two. Then there will be three.
Hmmmm...Steve Irwin was absolutely in love with and saw the divine in the animals and yet that ended quite badly for him. And how about tsunamis that have wiped out thousands of people ...was that their lack of love???
@@beebeetee9957 Sorry to answer your question with another video but I think this will clear things up: ruclips.net/video/95ZZvJAkU0c/видео.htmlsi=jo8FO159-d-xawUO
@@CircleOfAtonement Thank you I've just watched the video you sent and I totally get all of those concepts. I have watched hundreds of NDE's which speak to these principles & I think I have always perceived the world through this kind of lens. I was brought up without religion which helps also. My comment was really because of my confusion around what's said in "What is the real world" video about how we perceive the world wrongly (yes I agree, especially as adults) and if we only saw through pure awareness and love we would see as Jesus does and therefore for example animals & everything we perceive would respond accordingly. But what about - for an example - an innocent child of a few months ( pure innocent loving) paddling next to a crocodile. A child like this might even pat the crocodile on the nose if he or she had just seen cartoon images as is the norm...so the crocodile would respond in what way? I think you can see where I'm going with here. I'm finding the lack of CONTEXT with much of the teaching of ACIM to be really off putting. Am I getting something wrong? When you use the word "The World" it implies EVERYTHING we perceive..but then you suddenly switch to talking about inter- personal relationships . Totally different context!
Hmmmm..... This is very interesting topic to debate. To me it IS a self study course 100000% for the sole reason that you apply the course in YOUR mind only. It ISn't a self study course BECAUSE it is about the holy relationship. Teachers of God have been around before the course itself. And so the reference is not to a teacher of ACIM, but a teacher of God. And it doesn't mean do what you want, it literally means you are studying YOURSELF, both the Self you are and the self you made. The reasons you gave as to why its not a self study course are not really the reasons. There is 0.0000% chance that learning the course requires anything external except a relationship in which you can see the Christ in another and thus see it in yourself.
I hear you, except that wipes away the entire Manual for Teachers where he outlines a whole teacher / pupil model. You're correct on the main message of course. We are meant to see Christ in another and thus awaken ourselves, but he wants *teachers* to share that message and that's the plan for salvation. He literally calls it "the plan of the teachers". - Emily xx
Tom, I know you to be a serious student. I would really encourage you to seriously engage with the evidence here. This is the kind of thing that can’t be answered by asserting principles. You have to engage on the evidence level. What does it mean to call it a teacher’s manual? How does the Manual portray the relationship between pupil and teacher? What is being taught by teacher to pupil? What does it mean to say that this is a manual for teachers of ACIM (M-1.4:1)? What does M-2.1:2 imply about this issue? How is the word “pupil” used throughout the Manual? What about sections 24 and 29 where the pupil is explicitly being taught and guided through ACIM by his teacher? I know you as someone willing to go where the evidence leads. Why not take a deep look at the relevant evidence on this topic with an open mind and see where you land?
@CircleOfAtonement & @robertperry7823 Thanks for your reply. I am not denying that the course contains a teacher's manual and that there are obviously relationships in which true ideas are introduced, reinforced and hopefully experienced through the communication that happens between 2 minds seemingly at different points in their wakefulness. I disagree with the conclusions you drew from the presence of the manual, and what it means about how the course must be studied. I have always looked at the manual as a support for minds who have finished the workbook and have taken the step that made them a TOG (The step the teachers manual explicitly states) or its for people who have these sudden awakenings and experiences which they may not understand. The manual is a support for them. It isn't an implication that all course students must go out ther to find course teachers in order to learn. I never had a worldly teacher of ACIM...... I learned it, and never expected anyone to explain it to me, because I understood that I must learn to discern truth inside of my mind. You mention in the video that everyone reaches out for help when they come across the course. That could be guidance, but it also could be the authority problem. I've seen it be both. ***Do not forget the claim you are making with the video. ACIM is not a self study course. *** Everything else is just what you are using to prove your point. I disagree with this premise entirely, and the presence of the manual for teachers does not prove it to me, for the reasons explained above. I am speaking out because your premise re asserts the external search for authority or knowledge or understanding. The ego will study the course for 40 years as long as the student doesn't take the step INWARD to find true authority there.

Maybe self is referring to capital Self. It is a Self study course. Are you suggesting people change the copywriting/marketing to “a course to study the true Self.” Also there is a psychotherapy pamphlet. So therapy is might be a big part of healing for people.
@@leahleeds4289 No, not at all. It’s way more pedestrian than that. We are just saying the course isn’t something you are meant to learn by yourself, which is what people mean by “self-study.” The Course itself has a teacher / pupil model in mind. That’s it. - Emily xx
